About This Project

To promote physical and mental health, WHO recommends 10,000 steps per day for adults. However, many adults take less than that. The aim of the routine project was to find out to what extent the use of public transport contributes to increased physical activity. For the first time, empirical data on the actual movement potential of public transport were collected.

The project team developed a fitness journey planner that provides information about this movement potential. The results of the project show that people who use public transport can exercise a considerable amount of the daily physical activity recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) on their daily routes.
