About This Project

Cars come to a standstill on the motorway for various reasons. These represent a major road safety problem. The aim of the European project SHADAR – Stopped vehicle Hazards – Avoidance, Detection, And Response – is therefore to prevent accidents between suddenly stopped vehicles on the motorway with following drivers. The main focus of the research is on improved incident management in terms of detection and reporting. The research concentrates on three main areas:

  • detection and reporting technology
  • road user behaviour
  • response from national road managers
