The aim is to free drivers from the need for permanent monitoring of the driving situation and thus to allow other activities while driving in highly automated vehicles. The WACHsens project collects the necessary data in a gender-specific driving simulator study. An innovative step is the integration of multiple data sources into an overall system that is robust against errors and interference by individual sensors. The result of the project is a system of sensors, algorithms and a classification model that earlier and more reliably characterizes the condition of drivers than existing systems, based on comprehensive age and gender-specific training data and hence suitable for integration into the existing vehicle environment.
