According to a recent study, 25 per cent of all car accidents happen within the first three minutes of driving and a further 14 per cent within the first six minutes. Between ten and twenty minutes there is relatively speaking the lowest risk of accidents. After that there is a disproportionate increase. The authors of the study advise:
- replace short car journeys with cycling or walking
- plan breaks for longer journeys
- not to use your mobile phone when driving –> 26 percent of accidents are due to distraction caused by mobile phone use
“So if people could be encouraged to do without cars for short distances, up to 40 percent of all accidents could be avoided” (Katharina Sallinger Dolphin Technologies)
